Take Five For Health

There are 1,440 minutes in every day and you get to choose how to spend each of those. Everyone has different priorities but you can usually tell what things people value by how they spend their time. For me, exercising and eating healthy are extremely important. I know that that both have a strong impact on how I feel physically, so I make sure to have time for them. I walk to work rather than take public transportation and I take the time to cook healthy meals rather than eat takeout. Could you spare a few extra minutes in your days to incorporate healthy habits?

With healthy habits, just like exercising, every little bit counts. Here are several ways you can start living a healthier life in five minutes or less.

Less than one minute

  • Wash your hands to avoid getting sick from germs that have been spread. Use soap and water for just 20 seconds.
  • Protect your skin by using sun screen, wearing a hat, or protective clothing. Doing so will help lower your risk for skin cancer.
  • Wear a seatbelt and encourage the rest of your family to do the same.
  • Quickly scan food labels by checking out the fat, calories, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar content. Know what the serving size of the package is to make sure you are not getting too much of any one thing.

Less than five minutes

  • Make an appointment with your doctor. There are specific screenings you should receive at different ages. In general, you should have regular checkups with your doctor, routine teeth cleanings, and preventive screenings after a certain age, including mammography, Pap test, and prostate check.
  • Know your numbers. Keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and more. Knowing these can give you a quick glimpse of your health status and your risk for disease.
  • Prepare and eat healthy food. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables and pack them with lunch or for snacks at work.
  • Get some exercise. Walk to a coworker's office rather than send an email, take the stairs to another floor, or get out for a quick break during the day. The possibilities are endless.

There is no reason why everyone cannot incorporate at least one of these tips into their day. If you think that there is not time in your life for good health you might want to examine how you are spending your 1,440 minutes.
